Spatial concept for orientation at the railway track
The project „V.U.II“ emerged out of a semester project at the Offenbach Institut für Mobilitätsdesign (OIMD) with the project partner Deutsche Bahn under supervision from Prof. Peter Eckart and in teamwork with Dipl. Designer Annika Storch.
The project's goal was to develop a new overall concept for the „S-Bahn“ Platform at the train station „Hauptwache“ in the city center of Frankfurt (Main), Germany, to increase the user experience since the current state of the platform was quite dysfunctional in terms of wayfinding, effective peoplefow or using space in waiting situations where travelers are supposed to feel comfortable.
The concept for „V.U.II“ addresses these aspects and focuses on intuitive orientation in such a physical space, intending to improve the peopleflow, especially during rush hours. The concept involves architectural elements, as well as a concept for lighting and information distribution to provide easy wayfinding and a pleasant waiting atmosphere at the track.

The current state of the platform is in a problematic condition on multiple levels, like its damaged signage, doubtful colour concept which hides warning signs, etc.. We analyzed important parameters of wayfinding at a track to generate a new and integrative concept, which is traveller-focused and representative for the strategically important and highly frequented railway station in the center of Frankfurt (Main).
Intuitive orientation on the track
The room concept for V.U.II transforms the platforms entry-points into orientation supporting elements. The resulting spatial effect empowers the traveller to intuitively distinguish between entrances and exits and thus orientate themselves more quickly.
